Bulls Lose Weekend Finale In Extra Innings

HAMMOND, LA – The University at Buffalo softball team lost its final game of the opening weekend on Sunday as UB dropped an 8-7 contest in extra innings to Southeast Missouri State.

The Bulls struck first in the top of the second as senior Essence Savinon hit a ground-rule double to score senior Ashton Earnhardt. Freshman Karlie Fernandez drove in another run on a ground out and junior Leandra Jew hit an infield single to drive in the third run of the inning.  The Redhawks answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

The Bulls held on to the 3-2 lead into the seventh when they tacked on to their advantage as freshman Gabby Keller grounded out, but fellow freshman Jessica Goldyn was able to score on a SEMO error.  In the bottom half of the inning, UB was unable to close the door as Southeast Missouri State scored two runs to send the game into extra innings knotted at 4-4.

The teams used the international tiebreaker rule as Jew was placed on second.  The Bulls loaded the bases and drove in their first run of the inning as sophomore Alyssa Cuevas was hit by a pitch to take the lead. Savinon then singled to center field to score senior Savanna Norcio and give the Bulls a 6-4 lead.

Again, the Bulls were unable to keep their lead in the bottom of the eighth as Southeast Missouri State had runners on the corners with nobody out. Following an RBI single, the Redhawks placed two in scoring position and both came home to score on a single to center field, ending the game.

The Bulls finished with a season-high 10 hits, including two-hit games from Cuevas, Savinon, and Goldyn.  Senior Bobbi Langlois pitched the complete game for the Bulls.

"Of course I'm not happy that we lost, but I'm proud of the fight we showed today," said head coach Trena Peel.  "Every day I ask my girls to compete and today we finally played as one unit.  Essence had a great day as she stepped up and drove the ball hard and helped put us in a position to win.  Bobbi threw well and kept us in the game.  We just have to learn to finish."

The Bulls will return to action on Friday afternoon when they face George Mason at 12:00 pm.
