WASHINGTON, DC – The University at Buffalo softball team lost a pair of games to George Washington on Tuesday afternoon, losing 6-1 in the first game and 7-3 in the second contest.
In the opener, George Washington struck for one run in the first as well as two runs in the second and fourth to get out to the 5-0 lead. The Bulls got on the board in the top of the fifth as freshman Jenelle Martinez doubled to center field, scoring fellow freshman Ufuoma Ogagan.
The Colonials added one in the bottom of the sixth for the 6-1 victory. Sophomore Ally Power picked up the loss in the circle as she allowed 11 hits and four earned runs, while striking out two. The Bulls were outhit, 11-3. The three hits from Buffalo came from Martinez, Power, and senior Essence Savinon.
In the second game, George Washington scored two in the bottom of the first and one more in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Bulls got on the board in the top of the fourth as Buffalo loaded the bases with nobody out, but scored just one run on a sacrifice fly from freshman Jessica Goldyn.
GW scored two more in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bulls responded again in the sixth as they placed two in scoring position and Goldyn drove them both in with a single to center, pulling the Bulls back within, 5-2. The Colonials added two in the sixth.
Sophomore Brieanna Baker recorded the loss as she allowed five runs in 4.0 innings, while walking seven. Charlotte Miller came on in relief and struck out four in 2.0 innings of work. Freshman Gabby Keller went 2-of-4 from the plate, while Miller, Goldyn, and Danielle Lallos recorded the other hits.
"Our miscommunication on the defensive end hurt us today," said head coach Trena Peel.
UB will conclude its Spring Break trip tomorrow with a doubleheader at Mount St. Mary's beginning at 2pm. The Bulls will open conference play on Friday against Ball State. The games, which were originally scheduled to be played at Nan Harvey Field, have been moved to D'Youville College. There will be a doubleheader on Friday at 1:00pm, followed by a single game on Saturday at 9:00am.
