Bulls Embrace Warm Conditions on First Day of Bucknell Bison Classic

LEWISBURG, PA – The University at Buffalo track and field team traveled to central Pennsylvania to compete at the Bucknell Bison Classic and posted solid results on the first day of action on Saturday. With temperatures in the mid 80s in the afternoon, the conditions were excellent for the throwers. By the evening for the invitational 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m, the sun set, and the temps cooled down to under 70 – also great conditions.

Here are some highlights on the women's side: 

  • Samantha Hjelmar jumped a big personal best mark of 1.70/5'7.00" in the high jump, tying for 4th place in the field of 31 competitors. She has made the MAC Auto qualifying mark and is currently ranked #2 in the MAC.
  • Women's Discus Throw - Miranda Daucher had a season's best mark of 53.70/176'2", (just 2cm off of her lifetime best) to not only win the discus throw competition, but she smashed the facility record, which was held by Becky O'Brien of Buffalo (2011, 169'3").  Daucher has maintained her 1st place position in the MAC Rankings and she ranks #12 in the NCAA East Region. 
  • In the women's 5000m run, Morgan Mahoney ran a season's best 17:16.65, her second best time ever, and placed 25th of 125 runners in the field. She currently ranks #7 in the MAC. 

Here are some highlights on the women's side: 

  • Freshman Christopher Nowak ran a new personal best in the 1500m, 3:54.85 in the Invitational 1500m run. He ran a very aggressive race, leading his heat for most of the race.  He ranks #5 in the MAC.
  • Caleb Covell ran an excellent 5000m, cracking the top-5 UB times overall with his 14:46.45 time, placing 28 of 188 runners.  Caleb's time moves him into the #3 position in the MAC.
  • In the 10,000m, Benjamin Cardamone ran a personal best of 31:02.50, Liam Hilbert ran a best of 31.22.00, and Freshman Oscar Vazquez, in his debut 10,000m, made the USATF Junior Qualifying standard with his 31:40.16 performance. 
  • Brandon Burke jumped a season-best of 2.00m/6'6.75" in the high jump tying for 10th of 26 competitors.
  • In the men's discus throw, Sam Wray showed why he was the top high school recruit in 2016.  He threw a personal-best mark of 53.24m/174'08", placing 4th overall in a field of 43 competitors.  Wray reach the MAC Auto qualifying mark and currently ranks #3 in the MAC. Devon Patterson also had a personal best in the DT, with a mark of 48.19m/158'1".
