Bulls Picked Third in Preseason MAC Rankings

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo wrestling team is ranked third in the Mid-American Conference preseason rankings, the conference announced on Wednesday. It is the Bulls' highest preseason ranking since joining the conference in 1998.

Buffalo is coming off its best season in over a decade. The Bulls went 11-6 in dual matches last season, their most wins since the 2003-04 campaign. In addition, UB won four MAC duals, its most since joining the conference.

In the individual rankings, the Bulls have six wrestlers ranked in the 10 weight classes.

Coming off his MAC championship a season ago, Jake Gunning is the conference's top-ranked heavyweight wrestler. Gunning went 20-7 overall, 14-3 in duals and 5-3 in MAC duals last year.

The Bulls have three wrestlers ranked second in their respective weight classes. Kyle Akins is ranked second at 125; Bryan Lantry is ranked second at 133 and Brett Perry is ranked second at 184.

Elsewhere, Joe Ariola is ranked third at 197 and Jason Estevez is ranked fourth at 149.

The 2017-18 season begins on November 2 when the Bulls host Cal State Bakersfield at Alumni Arena.
